Building a Reading Habit Around Short Sessions

A reading routine does not require a large free evening. Short sessions can work when the book is easy to return to and the next session has an obvious place in your day. The aim is continuity rather than an impressive daily page count.

Choose a modest starting point, such as ten minutes after breakfast or before opening social media in the evening. Keep the book where that session happens. Removing a small obstacle often matters more than setting an ambitious target.

For difficult nonfiction, leave a brief note at the end of each session: the question being discussed, the main claim and the point where you stopped. For fiction, a character name or an unresolved scene may be enough.

Give yourself permission to adjust the book. A demanding novel may suit a quiet weekend while essays work better on a commute. Audiobooks and print can serve different situations, though switching formats requires keeping your place clear.

Review the routine after two weeks. If you consistently miss a session, change its timing or duration. A sustainable habit should fit your actual day and leave room for pleasure, curiosity and occasional breaks.
